Projects in open areas

Protecting and restoring the habitats of the Bistort copper.

This action plan continues the measures of the LIFE Eislek project, closed since 2018, for the protection and restoration of the habitats of the Bistort's Copper.

The Bistorta copper is an endangered butterfly species that lives in the wet meadows of the Luxembourg Ardennes (Ösling). Its range is linked to the presence of Bistorta (Polygonum bistorta), the only plant eaten by the species' caterpillars. Many wetland biotopes have been degraded or have disappeared, which explains the rarity of this glacial relict butterfly.

The Hёllef fir d'Natur Foundation is committed to the conservation and restoration of wet meadows in open environments. Various practical measures, such as mowing and clearing suitable areas, planting windbreaks, itinerant grazing and fencing, are implemented on the Foundation's land to conserve and even expand habitats suitable for the Bistort's Copperwort.
